A Review of Evidence that Ultraviolet-B Irradiance and Vitamin D Reduce Risk for Cancer
نویسندگان
چکیده
The solar ultraviolet-B (UVB)–vitamin D–cancer hypothesis was proposed in 1980 and has been actively investigated since then. The strongest evidence is from ecologic studies that use indices of solar UVB doses with geographic data on cancer incidence and/or mortality rates. Good evidence also comes from observational studies for breast and colorectal cancer incidence as well as survival rates for several cancers. Laboratory studies have well described the mechanisms whereby vitamin D reduces risk for cancer and increases survival rates after diagnosis. The hypothesis largely satisfies Hill’s criteria for causality for breast and colorectal cancer and moderately satisfies it for several other cancers. However, only two randomized controlled trials (RCTs) found a reduction in cancer incidence for higher vitamin D3 intake. Thus, general acceptance of the UVB–vitamin D–cancer hypothesis will probably be delayed until a large-scale RCT supports it.

The health benefits of vitamin D greatly outweigh the health risks.
Starting in the 1980s, largely observational evidence mounted that solar ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiance and vitamin D reduce the risk of many types of cancer. Based on observational studies, it is estimated that 1500 and 3600 International Units (IU) of vitamin D3 are required daily for a 50% reduction in risk of colorectal and breast cancer, respectively. A recent randomized, double-blind, pla...

A large body of evidence indicates that solar ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiance and vitamin D reduce the risk of incidence and death for many types of cancer. However, most of that evidence comes from midlatitude regions, where solar UVB doses are generally high in summer. Data on cancer standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) by sex and 54 occupation categories based on 1.4 million male and 1.36 mil...
متن کاملOn the roles of solar UV irradiance and smoking on the diagnosis of second cancers after diagnosis of melanoma
Several recent papers have reported standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for second cancers after diagnosis of cutaneous malignant melanoma. This review divides the types of cancer into five types: (1) those for which UV-B (UVB) irradiance and vitamin D reduces risk; (2) those for which UVB/vitamin D reduces risk and smoking increases risk; (3) smoking related; (4) unknown UVB/vitamin D and smo...

Vitamin D sufficiency is required for optimal health, and solar ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiance is an important source of vitamin D. UVB and/or vitamin D have been found in observational studies to be associated with reduced risk for over a dozen forms of cancer, multiple sclerosis, osteoporotic fractures, and several other diseases. On the other hand, excess UV irradiance is associated with adv...
متن کاملSolar ultraviolet irradiance and cancer incidence and mortality.
Evidence supporting the UVB/vitamin D/cancer theory continues to mount with little detraction, although there are some inconsistent results, such as some from Nordic countries, with respect to serum calcidiol levels. Also, studies designed and conducted before it was realized that dietary sources are largely inadequate to have a pronounced effect on cancer risk were largely unable to confirm a ...
